THE WORD "THẾ" IN VIETNAMESE
I. THẾ
1. To refer to what has been known, because it has been said, will be said or is
happening.
Example 1:
Sau khi giảng xong bài và cho một số ví dụ. Sau đó cô giáo hỏi sinh viên:
- Đã hiểu chưa?
- Hiểu rồi ạ
- Cứ thế mà làm.
After teaching and giving some examples, the teacher asked her students:
- Have you got it?
- Got it.
- So just do it. (Do exercise based on what she taught before)
Example 2:
Jake: Xin lỗi cô, Em đi học muộn.
Cô giáo: Bao giờ chả thế.
Jake: I’m sorry, I’m late.
Teacher: I get used to it.
2. Often used at the beginning or at the end of a question to emphasize the specific
nature associated with the reality (Adverb).
Example 1:
- Cô giáo: Các em đã làm xong bài tập chưa?
- John và Kate: Chưa ạ.
- Cô giáo: Thế bao giờ thì xong?
- Teacher: Have you finished your exercise?
- John and Kate: Not yet.
- Teacher: So when will finish it?
Example 2:
- Đi đâu thế?
- Where are you going?
3. Often used at the end of an expressive sentence to express the surprise when
recognizing the high level of an attribute that directly affects somebody or their
emotional state.
Example 1:
- Ở đây mát thế!
- It’s so cool here.
Example 2:
- Anh nói tiếng Việt giỏi thế!
- You speak Vietnamese really well.
